Nah’Shon Blount (USSW): Stay Fearless and Unionize to Get What You Deserve

On May Day in downtown Durham, over a thousand people from all walks of life filled the streets. Groups like Durham Rising, the Union of Southern Service Workers (USSW), the Durham Association of Educators (DAE), and others joined local residents with a clear goal. This new generation of activists is demanding what workers deserve. The energy was high as people reclaimed their power. They were speaking out against greedy corporations and local politicians to demand better pay, safe jobs, fair treatment for immigrants, and the right to unionize.

Member Spotlight: Thomas Lupton (Teamsters)

My name is Thomas Lupton. I’m originally from rural Eastern North Carolina, and I have lived in Western NC since 2007. I’m a UPS delivery driver, a rank-and-file Teamster, and I serve as the recording secretary of the Western NC Central Labor Council. I've been with UPS for 17 years, and have been delivering full-time since 2014.

Member Spotlight: Welcker Taylor (IAFF)

I’m Welcker Taylor, and I’m a captain at the Asheville Fire Department and President of Local 332 of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). I’ve been a career firefighter for 18 years, and I was a volunteer for seven years before that. I love this job because it's all about showing up for people when they need us the most, bringing in a bit of calm and compassion and technical knowledge to help solve people's emergencies.

Member Spotlight: Wayne Bostick (APRI)

I want people to know that there are lots of ways to get involved in the APRI. We have chapters throughout the state that do food distributions, clothing distributions, informational forums, and other programs, as well as what we’re known for nationally: voter registration, 365 days a year. I also want people to understand how important it is to be involved in the electoral process, and also to support unions, because strong unions are what make the difference in assuring that everyone has a livable wage job.
