Much of our work in 2016 focused on the election, and thanks the hard work of our affiliates, we elected Roy Cooper as governor, shifted the balance of power on the state supreme court by electing Mike Morgan, and elected labor-endorsed candidates to various state and local offices. But supporting our affiliates and growing our numbers remains at the core of our mission. In 2016 we hosted an Organizing Institute in Charlotte and convened an Organizing Roundtable. We continued to host our popular Carolina Labor School and held and advanced version for the first time in over 20 years. And we raised more resources for Central Labor Councils, for farmworker organizing, for our constituency groups like APRI and the Alliance for Retired Americans, and for our community affiliate - Working America. Support for our coalition partners in legislative and policy battles won special recognition for our state federation. The AFL-CIO's Pride at Work honored us with the Solidarity Award because of our opposition to House Bill 2. And the North Carolina Justice Center honored our state fed President James Andrews as a Champion of Justice. "2016 was an important year for the North Carolina State AFL-CIO," says Secretary-Treasurer MaryBe McMillan in the first-ever video annual report of our state federation, "but the work we do together this year can make a difference in the lives of working people everywhere.""In 2017, the North Carolina State AFL-CIO turns 60, and this year, we hope to raise the bar for our state federation even higher.
