Many faith traditions call on believers to support farm workers – some of the most exploited workers in the U.S. – and their efforts to improve their lives.
"You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or aliens who reside in your land." (Deut 24: 14)
"And O my people! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due." (Qur’an 11:85)
Putting Our Faith into Action: Supporting Farm Workers in NC is an opportunity to learn about farm workers’ struggle for justice and how we can support them in their efforts to gain dignity on the job, better pay, and safer working conditions.
Join us as we gather with people from various faith backgrounds to hear about farm workers’ experiences in the tobacco fields, learn about their struggle to bring the protections of a union to more NC farm workers, and find out how you can take part in this important effort.
Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) President Baldemar Velasquez will be present to give the latest information on FLOC's Reynolds American campaign.
Representatives from the National Farm Worker Ministry, recently relocated to Raleigh, will join Triangle Friends of Farmworkers and Durham Congregations in Action to describe ways they are helping to support FLOC’s efforts to reform the current tobacco supply chain that exploits farm labor in North Carolina.
