Press Release: North Carolina’s Unions Celebrate Victories for Roy Cooper and Anita Earls

North Carolina AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston released the following statement in response to Roy Cooper’s election to the United States Senate and Justice Anita Earls’ reelection to the North Carolina Supreme Court:

“North Carolina’s working people have spoken, and they’ve made it clear that they want leaders who will fight for them. Roy Cooper’s election to the U.S. Senate and Justice Anita Earls’ reelection to our North Carolina’s highest court are major victories for working families who deserve an economy that works for everyone and a state Supreme Court that protects everyone’s rights.

“North Carolina has been ranked the best state for business for three of the last six years, and the worst state for workers for seven years in a row. That tells you everything you need to know about what’s wrong with our priorities. Working people are struggling to afford groceries, health care, child care, and housing while corporate profits keep growing. Roy Cooper understands these challenges because he’s spent his career fighting for working families. From expanding Medicaid and reducing medical debt to raising pay for public employees and supporting communities devastated by natural disasters, he’s shown what it means to put people first. Now, working North Carolinians will have a proven champion fighting for them in Washington D.C.

“Justice Anita Earls has spent her career defending the constitutional rights of North Carolinians, from protecting our freedom to vote without discrimination, to funding high quality public education, and standing up to corporate polluters and profiteers. At a time when the independence of our courts and the rights of working people are under attack, her reelection sends a powerful message: North Carolinians want a Supreme Court that upholds the law, not a partisan agenda.

“The North Carolina AFL-CIO is proud of the union member volunteers who knocked doors, made calls, and had conversations with their coworkers and neighbors to help make these victories possible. Working people know that when we organize together, we have the power to change what’s possible for our families and our communities.

“With Senator-elect Roy Cooper in Washington and Justice Anita Earls continuing her service on the North Carolina Supreme Court, we’re ready to keep fighting for higher wages, affordable healthcare, strong public schools, and a North Carolina where every working person has a fair shot at a good life.”
