North Carolina Labor Movement Condemns GOP Plan to Rig Congressional Maps Ahead of Elections Next Year
Raleigh, NC – North Carolina State AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston issued the following statement in response to plans by GOP legislative leaders to further skew our state’s congressional maps to appease Donald Trump’s power grab at the expense of NC voters:
“There are no kings in North Carolina. Unfortunately, we do have many petty partisans in positions of power – weak men cowed by a wannabe king who is desperate to avoid being held accountable by voters for his costly and chaotic anti-worker agenda. We condemn the efforts of Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Destin Hall to rig the outcome of congressional elections next year by changing district maps in response to the marching orders of Donald Trump.
“Instead of passing a state budget, paying workers who provide critical services to our families what they deserve, or protecting Medicaid and food assistance for seniors and kids, our General Assembly is playing political games to pay for presidential endorsements of its failed leadership. Their choices threaten to suppress the voices of voters in this state and the ability of workers to secure our freedom to thrive.
“The idea that all political power is derived from the people is a bedrock democratic principle and at the heart of the labor movement. In the coming days and weeks, our worker-led movement will organize and participate in First Amendment activities to ensure that the will of working people, not billionaires, wins the day.”
