May Day Strong: NC Labor Movement Celebrates International Workers Day 2026

President Winston says now is the time to build for mass actions to disrupt the well-organized, joint efforts of corporations and the White House to exploit American workers.

Raleigh, NC – North Carolina State AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston issued the following statement celebrating International Workers Day, May Day 2026:

“Working people are living on the edge and struggling to make ends meet. Everything is too expensive—we work harder while our pay stagnates and billionaire CEOs get richer off our stolen wages. Federal workers are under attack, and the essential services we rely on are in jeopardy. The Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda is trampling on working people’s fundamental freedoms. Now is the time to build coalitions between unorganized workers, unions, and community members for mass actions to disrupt the well-organized, joint efforts of corporations and the White House to exploit American workers.

“We at the NC State AFL-CIO commit to helping our member unions organize workers and to bringing all working people into our movement for mass action. May Day 2026 is a time to discuss our shared challenges, find opportunities for change, and plan for a future where we can all thrive.

“The actions we take on International Workers Day are about building the political, social, community, and labor coalitions needed to disrupt the status quo. The power we flex this May Day will fuel our unwavering commitment to building a bigger, more effective, unified labor movement to win victories for working families. Hard work deserves respect, and every worker deserves a union!”
