North Carolina AFL-CIO Condemns NC House Omnibus Election Bill

NC federation of labor unions calls on state lawmakers to reject House Bill 958

Raleigh, NC – North Carolina State AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston issued the following statement in response to the NC House’s consideration of H.B. 958:

“The sweeping changes proposed in H.B. 958 are not legitimate measures to increase election integrity. The bill is a messy and disorganized attempt to legislate election results. It is the newest next effort to bend the rules of our elections in favor of one party, in the tradition of biased electoral maps and attempts to discredit votes to reverse election results.

“Among this bill’s many damaging provisions are changes to the election auditing and vote challenging processes. These accomplish nothing, except to allow further partisan manipulation of our elections. Other changes include more restrictions for overseas voters—including our active duty military servicemembers—and relaxed requirements for campaign donors. These also accomplish nothing, except to limit who can vote and expand who can donate anonymously to influence elections. This bill seeks to further weaken the freedom of North Carolinians to choose who represents them, and we urge the House and Senate to reject it.”
