North Carolina’s Labor Movement Celebrates Justice Allison Riggs’ Supreme Court Election Victory After Months of Contestation

North Carolina State AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan released the following statement on the news that Jefferson Griffin has finally conceded defeat in the November 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court race:

“After over six months of unprecedented legal challenges, multiple recounts, and attempts to throw out tens of thousands of ballots, the North Carolina Republican Party’s effort to undermine our voting rights and our democratic process has failed. Jefferson Griffin made this effort to disenfranchise voters, many of whom are military servicemembers, into a shameful national spectacle.

“Working people can now breathe a sigh of relief that this bad faith campaign to—in the words of Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Myers—‘change the rules of the game after it had been played’ is over. We look forward to the State Board of Elections certifying Justice Riggs’ victory so she can continue doing the important job that the people of North Carolina elected her to do.”
