Raleigh, N.C.– The men and women of North Carolina’s union movement are kicking off their election year campaign, Labor 2012, with screenings this month of the short video “Meet Mr. 1%”. With Mitt Romney as the frontrunner for the GOP’s presidential candidate, North Carolina union members organizing the events seek to show their local community who Romney is and what he stands for.
“Meet Mr. 1%” is a short video created by the AFL-CIO that highlights Romney’s own words to reveal his real stances on issues such as jobs and the economy, workers’ rights, immigration, women’s health and more. The video also features interviews with working women and men who discuss how Mitt Romney’s policies are designed to benefit the very rich at the expense of the 99%. As the video concludes, North Carolinians are urged to get involved in the 2012 elections to help promote candidates who will strive to create an economy that works for all.
“The future of North Carolina’s economic recovery is going to depend heavily on the outcome of this year’s elections,” said MaryBe McMillan, Secretary-Treasurer of the NC State AFL-CIO.
“We are holding these screenings because our communities can’t afford not to know the consequences of Mitt Romney’s policies and the way his past actions have already devastated working families across the country. Everyone needs to get involved this year to support candidates who share our values and will fight for working families.”
In addition to screenings of “Meet Mr. 1%” at every Central Labor Council (CLC) meeting in North Carolina, DVDs of the short video are being distributed to local unions from Manteo to Murphy.
“There’s only one candidate for president who values work and condemns greed,” said Mark Case, President of the Western North Carolina CLC after a recent screening in Asheville, NC. “As ‘Meet Mr. 1%’ makes clear, his name is not Mitt Romney.”
