North Carolina’s Labor Movement Congratulates Justice Allison Riggs on Winning Supreme Court Election, Calls on Griffin to Concede Defeat

Statement from the North Carolina AFL-CIO demands that the NCGOP abandon its anti-democratic efforts to engineer a win by disenfranchising tens of thousands of working people who have made their voices heard

Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina State AFL-CIO congratulates Justice Allison Riggs on winning the election to maintain her seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court. After two thorough statewide recounts of all ballots, Justice Riggs won by 734 votes out of over 5.5 million cast. Instead of gracefully conceding, her opponent, Jefferson Griffin, is attempting to throw out tens of thousands of votes—many of which were cast by members of our military—in an attempt to undermine our democratic process.

“Every vote counts, and now that every ballot has been tallied multiple times, it is clear that Allison Riggs is the winner,” said NC State AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan. “It’s time for Judge Griffin to concede that he lost in a free and fair election. Admitting defeat in a close election may be a bitter pill to swallow – just ask former Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, who had to concede to Paul Newby after coming up 401 votes short in 2020 – but it is time for Judge Griffin to take his medicine. North Carolina voters have spoken; Judge Griffin needs to listen.”
