BAD TRADE PRACTICES HAVE COST NORTH CAROLINA 107,390 JOBS SENT TO CHINA

While Congress considers three new trade agreements, many North Carolina working families question benefits from deals

Raleigh, N.C. – 107,390 North Carolina jobs have been lost because of unfair trade practices with China, according to a report released by the Alliance for American Manufacturing.  The report comes as members of Congress consider trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama in the coming weeks.  Working people in North Carolina are calling on lawmakers to pass job-creating policies, not bad trade deals that have been proven to destroy jobs.

Across the country, 2.8 million jobs have been lost because of skewed trade policies with China.  And there is evidence more jobs will disappear if the trade deals currently before Congress are enacted.  According to the Economic Policy Institute, an economic think tank, the pending Korea trade deal will destroy 159,000 jobs.

“I worked at Continental Tire before they moved production overseas, and I am still living with the fallout from bad trade deals: job loss for me and destruction of our local economy but big profits for corporate CEOs,” said Ginnie Watson of Gastonia, NC.  “Congress needs to get real and focus on fixing our jobs crisis, not on trade deals that enrich big business, take away jobs in North Carolina, and hurt workers in other countries.”
