North Carolina State AFL-CIO Applauds Gov. Stein’s Veto of House Bill 958
RALEIGH, NC – North Carolina State AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston has released the following statement following Governor Josh Stein’s veto of H.B. 958:
North Carolina’s unions applaud Governor Josh Stein for his veto of House Bill 958 today.
Across the state, prices are skyrocketing. The cost of housing, gas, groceries and other necessities are going up while the size of our paychecks remain the same. Working people have been loud and clear that they want lawmakers to help make their lives more affordable. Instead, the North Carolina General Assembly is wasting time on legislation that rolls back our voting freedoms.
H.B 958 was a shameless attempt to restrict the ability of eligible voters in our state to have a fair say in who represents them. This bill would have also created more threats to our election integrity, reduced early voting periods in our state, required the State Board of Elections to institute a process for removing voters without establishing clear standards for verifying the information or notifying affected voters, and loosened regulations on campaign finance reporting in our state.
These are not the priorities of the working people state lawmakers represent. It’s clear as day that this bill was a gift from corporate-backed politicians to the ultra wealthy who seek to further weaken voter rights.
The NC State AFL-CIO thanks Gov. Stein for his rejection of this anti-worker, anti-voter bill. Our movement will continue to fight to expand and protect the right of hardworking North Carolinians to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
