Advisory for June 20, 2019

United Auto Workers, AFL-CIO to Host “Workers’ Bill of Rights” Town Hall in Statesville

What: "Workers' Bill of Rights" Town Hall

When: Thursday, June 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Where: UAW Local 3520, 2290 Salisbury Rd, Statesville, NC 28677

Why: Too many people work hard but still can't make ends meet and feel increasingly isolated from one another and ignored by policy makers, especially in our rural counties. This town hall is an opportunity for workers to build community and to make their voices heard.

Who: United Auto Workers Local 3520, NC State AFL-CIO, and Southern Piedmont Central Labor Council along with Salisbury Mayor Al Heggins and state labor federation president MaryBe McMillan

More Info: On June 20th at 6:00 PM in Statesville, UAW Local 3520, which represents almost 2,000 people working at Freightliner in neighboring Rowan County, is teaming up with the NC State AFL-CIO to host a "Workers' Bill of Rights" Town Hall. At the town hall, workers, union and community members, and elected officials, including Salisbury Mayor Al Heggins, will come together to share personal stories of victories and challenges in the workplace and in public policy and to declare that working together, especially in unions, is the best way for working people to reclaim our freedoms. The topic of the town hall will be the AFL-CIO's 9-point Workers' Bill of Rights and will include a discussion of the needs of communities and workers in rural areas. The town hall also will feature the first-ever Piedmont exhibition of "North Carolina Labor History Revealed," which presents the rich history of worker organizing in our state. Free food and childcare provided.
