We Support the 2011 United Way Campaign
Help continue a proud labor tradition
The following is a letter from NC State AFL-CIO President James Andrews and Secretary-Treasurer MaryBe McMillan sent to all affiliated local unions in North Carolina about supporting the 2011 United Way Campaign:
Dear Union Leader,
In the past two years, we’ve all seen how interconnected we are. When people are unemployed and more families are financially unstable, the impact is felt throughout the community and even throughout a region as money tightens up everywhere.
For nearly seven decades, the AFL-CIO has taken great pride in its partnership with United Way. Even in times of economic distress, our people have joined forces with others to advance the common good. As a result, we are making great strides in reaching our shared goals to improve education, health, and financial stability, the building blocks for a good quality of life.
Whether or not we know a child on the other side of town, it matters to us whether that child grows up to be a contributing member of the community. We all have a stake in that and a responsibility to do our part. Please join us in supporting the 2011 United Way Campaign. By doing so, you are helping create opportunities for a good life for all.
Sincerely,
James Andrews, President MaryBe McMillan, Secretary-Treasurer
We hope your local union or state council will make a contribution to the United Way. Just $50 or $100 from each of our affiliates would add up to a significant contribution to the United Way from North Carolina’s union movement. We know there are some of our affiliates who could afford to do even more. Please share this message at your next local or council meeting.
