Statement on President Trump’s Food Line Photo Op in Mills River
For Immediate Release
Statement from North Carolina AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan On President Trump’s Visit To Mills River Farm Packing House
“Working people don’t want food line handouts and presidential photo-ops. What workers need are presidential leadership and the passage of the HEROES Act.” --MaryBe McMillan
“President Donald Trump visited Flavor 1st Growers and Packers, a food distribution site in Mills River, for a photo-op today — just three days after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced North Carolina’s unemployment rate is at nearly nine percent. It is disgraceful that millions of North Carolinians continue to suffer through no fault of their own and yet President Trump chooses to praise himself instead of offering relief for our working people.
"Coincidentally, today marks 101 days since the HEROES Act, a comprehensive COVID-19 relief bill, was passed by the U.S. House. Working people don’t want food line handouts and presidential photo-ops. What workers need are presidential leadership and the passage of the HEROES Act, which would include the extension of the $600 per week federal supplemental unemployment benefit so that they can afford to buy their own food and take care of their families."
