Statement by NC State AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan in Support of the May 1st Public Education Day of Action
“We march to inspire citizens around the state to stand up and speak up because together we can make a difference.” — MaryBe McMillan
(RALEIGH, May 1, 2019) — “Postal workers, electricians, nurses and other union members who are part of the NC State AFL-CIO join with teachers, school employees, parents, and students in demanding that our legislature invest more in public education,” said MaryBe McMillan, president of North Carolina’s labor federation, about the tens of thousands of teachers, education workers, and other people expected to attend the May 1st Public Education Day of Action at the state legislature.
“We march because North Carolina students deserve better. Our students deserve safe schools with modern textbooks and technology. They deserve well-trained and compensated professionals instructing them in the classroom, driving them on the school bus, and taking care of them in the infirmary.”
“We march not only because we want to ensure quality public education for students and at least a minimum wage of $15 an hour for classified school employees, but also because we’re fed up with the inequality and divisiveness in this country. We march to be an example of unity in a time of deep division. We march to show lawmakers that we’re tired of politicians of both parties putting corporate interests over that of working families. We march to inspire citizens around the state to stand up and speak up because together we can make a difference.”
“Enough is enough! Our students, our school employees, and our citizens deserve better, and by standing up and standing together, we will ensure we get better.”
