It's time to take a stand for democracy!

State lawmakers will return to Raleigh on Wednesday, July 13 for a special session during which Republicans will use their majorities in the House and Senate to renew their attacks on our voting rights and gerrymander voting districts. And we will be there to greet them.

What: Rally to Respect & Protect the Vote
Where: State Legislative Building, 16 W. Jones St., Raleigh, NC
When: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11:00am
Wear Red: Because we're seeing red over these blatant attacks on voting rights

In addition to attempting an override of Gov. Perdue's veto of their pernicious Voter Photo ID bill, the very same Republicans who benefited from current election law to win control of the General Assembly last Fall will try to pass new laws to pull up the ladder to power. Among these efforts will be laws that would suppress the vote and manipulate the voting process.

From Democracy NC:

Republican leaders in Raleigh promised a “new day” but, instead, they are taking us backwards. During the session that begins on July 13, efforts to suppress the vote and manipulate the voting process will continue to be front and center. Legislators will try to override Gov. Perdue’s veto of the photo ID bill (HB-351). In addition, they want to pass extreme bills (like SB-47), that would eliminate Same Day Registration, slice a week off Early Voting, end straight-ticket voting and eliminate successful public financing programs. Meanwhile, redistricting of voting districts is underway and the stakes are huge! We can’t stop now.

The NC State AFL-CIO is proud to stand with our coalition partners at Democracy NC and against the transparent attempts by the party in power to play politics with our right to vote. It’s time for all of us to take a stand for democracy! Join us in Raleigh July 13th!
