NC APRI Honored with Multiple Awards at National Conference
Staying 'Woke': Organize, Educate, Register, and Vote!
North Carolina A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) received 5 awards at their 48th National Education Conference in Hollywood, Florida earlier this month.
"The theme of this year's conference was 'Stay Woke,'" said North Carolina APRI Executive Assistant and Youth Leader, Shavon Grimes. "We discussed the importance of APRI staying conscious and mindful of the political and community climate that we are facing today and our up hill battle with ignorance and hate. It is important that we work harder than ever to register voters and educate the community on the importance of going to the polls and using their voice."
"North Carolina APRI was a point of focus of the conference because we have one of the most successful state APRI chapter, we are the only state with a Bayard Rustin LBGTQ chapter, we are the only state with youth chapters, and we are the only state with a youth chapter that has their own non-profit. We taught sessions/workshops on building youth chapters, starting and maintaining an APRI non-profit, the LGBTQ community, and Black Lives Matters."
Named after the legendary trade union organizer and director of the March on Washington, Asa Philip Randolph, APRI was founded to promote unionism in the black community.
North Carolina APRI has been honored countless times for their dedication and hard work to make sure that the community's voice is heard. Here is the list of awards they received this year:
- Outstanding APRI State Award North Carolina State
- Outstanding Chapter Award North Carolina State
- Outstanding Chapter Award North Carolina Youth Chapter
- Outstanding Service Award (both Ms. Denicia Montford-Williams and Ms. Dora Grimes received this award)
