Renew the fight for voting rights with Moral Movies (6/24)

Freedom Summer will be screened June 24th across NC

Freedom Summer will be screened June 24th across NC

Fifty years have passed since Freedom Summer, when more than 700 local organizers and students took segregated Mississippi by storm, registering voters and creating freedom schools. This effort put a national spotlight on the violent voter suppression facing Black Americans in the deep south and ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Half a century later, voting rights are under attack again. NC State AFL-CIO is proud to support Democracy NC in bringing the new movie Freedom Summer to eight cities across North Carolina as part of the Moral Movies film series. This award-winning one-hour documentary takes a look back at the Summer of ‘64 and offers a resonate and compelling call for renewed efforts to protect voting rights and access to the polls. What: Moral Movies: Freedom SummerWhen: Tuesday, June 24th at 7:00 PM* Where: Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro (*6:30 PM), Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington (addresses below) RSVP:Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, FayettevilleGreensboro, Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington Check out this absolutely-chilling Freedom Summer trailer here (http://vimeo.com/83539844). Film synopsis from Firelight Media:
Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Murder of Emmett Till), FREEDOM SUMMER highlights an overlooked but essential element of the Civil Rights Movement: the patient and long-term efforts by both outside activists and local citizens in Mississippi to organize communities and register black voters — even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death. The Freedom Summer story reminds us that the movement that ended segregation was far more complex than most of us know.
Moral Movies has been bringing award-winning documentaries to cities across North Carolina to jump-start community dialogue and action on social, economic, and environmental issues, since April with screenings of American Teacher followed by American Winter in May. The series will continue through July in Wilmington, Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville, Fayetteville and Durham. If you’re in one of these locations please join us for one of these FREE screenings in June and bring a friend. Together, we can strengthen democracy across the state! Moral Movies is a collaboration among national nonprofit Working Films (based in Wilmington), the NC NAACP, and allied organizations across the state. See below for the full schedule of Freedom Summer screenings taking place across the state this month, and for more information about the ongoing series, please visit the Working Films blog.
