James Andrews Interviewed on EFCA 'Compromise'
VIDEO: WRAL in Raleigh asks what compromise would mean
Cullen Browder with Raleigh CBS affiliate WRAL has been reporting on the debate in Congress and in North Carolina about the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).
The legislation is currently stalled in the U.S. Senate, and there has been talk in the press about a potential compromise bill that could garner enough votes to break a Republican-led filibuster of the most important labor law reform in decades. Cullen sat down with NC AFL-CIO President James Andrews to talk about what 'compromise' would mean for organized labor. Watch the video:
EFCA is legislation that would level the playing field for workers when they want to organize and form unions. The bill gives employees alone the right to decide on majority sign-up or a so-called 'secret ballot' election, provides for mediation and arbitration for first contracts, and greatly increases penalties on employers who break the law during union campaigns.
The AFL-CIO has not agreed on any changes to the language of the Employee Free Choice Act. Until the lead co-sponsor in the U.S. Senate, Tom Harkin (D-IA) says otherwise, talk of 'compromise' on the Employee Free Choice Act is pure media speculation.
