The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, benefits Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
In 2013, letter carriers collected 74.4 million pounds of food in thousands of communities, helping to put millions of meals on the tables of Americans in need. The haul last year was 5 percent greater than 2012 and the 2nd largest in the history of the food drive. Since 1992, letter carriers have collected just under 1.3 billion pounds of food for Americans in need.
"This demonstrates in clear fashion the value of the unique postal network, which goes to 151 million addresses six days a week," NALC President Fredric Rolando said.
"It also shows the remarkable connection between letter carriers and the communities they serve—a bond that serves the nation well." -- Fredric Rolando
Here’s how it works
To take part in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, peanut butter, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox before the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 10.
The nation's 175,000 letter carriers, representing nearly 1,500 NALC branches in more than 10,000 communities, will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to a local Feeding America food bank or hunger-relief organization.
