Governor Vetoes Bill that Would Undermine UI Program
SB 532 failed "to Protect Businesses, Workers"
Gov. Perdue vetoed a bill this week that would have destroyed the Employment Security Commission and cost North Carolina's unemployment benefits program millions of dollars in federal money while raising unemployment tax rates on businesses.
“This bill will raise unemployment taxes on various businesses of all shapes and sizes across the state. It will also greatly increase the amount of time a company has to respond to an unemployment claim, which violates federal policy and could delay benefits for people who are entitled to receive them. Finally, this bill will likely cost North Carolina millions of federal dollars that unemployed people and their families need so desperately.”
We thank Governor Perdue for continuing to stand up for jobless North Carolinians and against continual efforts by Republican legislators to undermine our vital unemployment benefits program.
