The restaurant industry doesn't have to suck the life out of its workers

Acclaimed author Saru Jayaraman will be in Durham for a special event Thursday, April 28 to talk about ways diners can leverage their collective power to force the restaurant industry to change its anti-worker ways.

What: Meet Saru at our event in Durham, NC

When: Thursday, April 28 at 6:00 PM

Where: Temple Building, 302 W. Main St. Durham, NC 27701

One of the largest and fastest-growing segments of the United States economy is also the absolute lowest-paying employer in the U.S.—the restaurant industry. Offering many young people the opportunity to begin their working lives and providing those with few marketable skills entrance into the job market, the restaurant industry plays a significant role in American culture.

In her new book, FORKED: A New Standard for American Dining, author and James Beard Leadership Award winner Saru Jayaraman offers an insider's view of the highest—and lowest—scoring restaurants for worker pay and benefits in each sector of the restaurant industry, and with it, a new way of thinking about how and where we eat.

Up for discussion during the roundtable:

  • The history of tipping in the U.S.
  • The impact of the lobbying group, the National Restaurant Association, has had enormous influence on tipped workers and others throughout the industry. Learn more about this group and how they’ve shaped an industry.
