Batgirl still fighting to get Equal Pay for Equal Work (video)

U.S. Dept. of Labor marks Equal Pay Day on April 14

Forty years after Batgirl complained to Batman that he doesn't pay her as much as Robin for doing the same work, women and working families in this country are still receiving only 78 percent of the pay as men for doing the same work for the same employer.

Tuesday, April 14 is Equal Pay Day - the day into the new year by which a woman in the United States would have to work just to make as much money as a man did last year.

This year the U.S. Department of Labor is going all-out to call for #EqualPayNow with a new promotional video featuring Batgirl and a live conversation on Tuesday hosted by Secretary of Labor Tom Perez with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, senior advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett, and Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro.

Despite passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which requires that men and women in the same work place be given equal pay for equal work, the "gender gap" in pay persists. Full-time women workers' earnings are only about 78% of their male counterparts' earnings. For women of color, the gap is even worse.

Equal pay is not just a woman's issue — but a family issue as well. Women make up nearly half of the U.S. labor force and are a growing number of breadwinners in their families. When women are not paid fairly, not only do they suffer, but so do their families and our economy.
