APWU Local 1807 in Hickory Needs Our Solidarity
URGENT: Town Hall on plant closing is Thursday (11/19)
We have received an urgent request for solidarity assistance from APWU Local 1807 in Hickory, NC. As we've highlighted in past email updates and in our recent newsletter, the U.S. Postal Service is cutting services and window hours, consolidating rural routes, and has even sought legislation to undermine collective bargaining.
Now the USPS is threatening to close the mail processing center in Hickory, NC. The move would hurt jobs and services in an already economically hard hit region of the state. A public hearing has been scheduled for next week, and Local 1807 needs our support at that meeting:
APWU Local 1807 is asking for solidarity and support from our brothers in other unions. The United States Postal Service is trying to downsize the Hickory Processing & Distribution Plant and move some operations to Greensboro -- over 80 miles away. This move could mean slower, less reliable mail service in our area and the loss of over 200 jobs!
The USPS is holding a town hall meeting on November 19, 2009 at 6PM in Hickory, and we are asking for solidarity from our brothers and sisters in North Carolina and beyond to help us stand against the job losses.
