In September at the 68th Annual Convention of the North Carolina AFL-CIO, delegates approved six resolutions to guide the federation's future work. Resolutions were adopted in the areas of organizing, policy, politics, racial justice, farm labor, and coordinated mass action in 2028. State fed staff is working with our Executive Board to turn these resolutions into actions so North Carolina workers get the respect, security, and power they deserve.

Resolution 1, “It’s Better in a Union: Growing our Membership and Our Power,” focuses on the unprecedented attacks on labor unions and workers’ rights by the federal government. Seventy percent of Americans approve of unions, yet the Trump Administration is taking away collective bargaining rights and crippling the National Labor Relations Board, the federal agency that enforces labor laws. NC State AFL-CIO members will move in solidarity to organize, coordinate, and campaign to protect workers’ freedom to form and join together in unions and defend their families against economic injustices.

Resolution 2, “Fighting For Pro-Worker Policies,” lays out a legislative agenda that includes: supporting policies that support union organizing, extending unemployment benefits, remove barriers to good jobs, funding for public schools, affordable childcare, raising the minimum wage, protecting Medicaid funding, reinstating the state Earned Income Tax Credit, providing adequate disaster relief, protecting the right to vote, and addressing systemic racism in American institutions.

Resolution 3, “Organizing To Win - Exercising the Power of Our Vote,” commits the federation to building a perpetual political program. By registering and turning out voters, we will elect labor champions and support worker friendly public policy. We will support members of our Union family who want to run for office and want to work to get working people elected into public office. Union workplaces will be politically active workplaces.

Resolution 4, “Racial Justice, Immigrant Justice, and Worker Justice are One,” recognizes that our Labor movement sits at the intersection of several social justice movements. We embrace the diversity of our membership and strive for equitable access to fair jobs in all communities for ALL people–Black, brown, and white; urban and rural; immigrant and native born. Immigrants don’t threaten our jobs, health and safety, or democracy; billionaires with unchecked power and influence are the real threat. We will resist their efforts to divide us by using a racial justice lens to see our shared struggle and stand in solidarity with immigrant workers.

Resolution 5, “Resolution On Agricultural And Immigrant Workers,” supports the call by the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) for immigration reform and the protection of human rights for immigrants. We reject the union busting being waged on North Carolina farm workers.

Resolution 6, “Supporting UAW’s Call for Mass Action on International Workers Day, May 1 2028,” resolves that the NC State AFL-CIO observes International Workers Day and will begin organizing to participate in mass national action on May 1, 2028. We make an unwavering commitment to educate and empower working people to form and join unions and to support our affiliates in bargaining for fair contracts.

These resolutions represent the priorities of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO. We will use innovative organizing strategies and the power of coalitions to build a state where every worker has a good, safe job with the right to unionize to secure respect for hard work and the freedom to thrive.
