Mary Montford Given “Rosa Tucker Award” by National APRI
Congratulations, Sister Mary!
Mary Montford, Executive Director of the North Carolina A. Philip Randolph Institute (pictured right with NC Governor Bev Perdue), received the “Rosa Tucker Award” at the National APRI Education Conference in Miami, Florida last month. It is the APRI’s highest award.
Rosina Tucker, born in 1881 and the daughter of a former slave, was the founder and first secretary-treasurer in 1937 of the International Ladies Auxiliary. The Auxiliary organized the wives of porters in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters union where Rosina had worked with its founder, Asa Philip Randolph. The Auxiliary was instrumental in supporting the Pullman Porters in their successful effort to organize a union and improve wages and working conditions.
