Giving homeless people a clean start and cyclists a safe ride

SMART Union member and CATS bus driver Debra Franklin is getting recognition for giving back to the Queen City community.

Debra has been collecting and passing out bags of toiletries to passengers in need on her bus route, and FOX 46 recently did a story about Debra's latest big idea to give people in Charlotte a clean start on the road out of homelessness:

A local woman is getting results in the Charlotte community, one bar of soap at a time. She now has a plan to combine a city bus and a shower to help combat homelessness in the Queen City.

They are life's little necessities that many of us take for granted, but for people who live on the streets sometimes the only way they can get them is from Debra Franklin.

"Sometimes you hear the stories and it is because they were a paycheck away from paying rent," said Franklin, who has been a CATS bus driver for more than a decade.

Debra, who, when she's not driving a bus, is an avid bicycle rider and certified League Cycling Instructor, was recently profiled in the Winter 2018 issue of Bicycle Friendly America, for her work to promoting bicycle safety in Charlotte.
