Currently the Hickory Mail Processing Center employs almost 200 people.  It has ranked in the top 5 plants nationwide (out of almost 400) every year.  Despite this high-level of performance, the USPS management is determined to shut down this plant.

Recently the workers from the Hickory-area postal workers union Local 1807 have successfully picketed in Lenoir, Boone, Morganton, & Hickory. Cities and town in the area have adopted resolutions condemning the plans by the USPS to shutdown the only mail processing facility in this part of Western North Carolina.
