Public debate on issues that matter to working people increasingly plays out on Twitter, where hashtags like #WeAreNotThis or #MeToo can rally opposition to harmful laws like HB2 or drive a national conversation about sexual harassment in the workplace. Our labor movement must be engaged in the debate if we want to win over hearts and minds on issues like fair wages and our freedom to form unions. No other previous experience with Twitter is required to enroll.

HOW MUCH IT COSTS:

Slots in the TPA are $100 each for the full program, with our state federation subsidizing the rest of the cost. [Scholarships are available; see below for more info.] There is no cap on the number of people who can enroll.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

People without the means to pay the registration fee or without a fiscal sponsor to pay the cost can apply for a scholarship. Scholarships are made possible by the generous support of our affiliates, and will be limited in number.

To apply for a scholarship, send an email to jeremy@aflcionc.org and put “TPA scholarship” in the subject line. Then, in a few sentences, tell us why you want to enroll in the Twitter Power Academy, how you intend to use what you learn to build power for working people in North Carolina, and why the freedom to join together in strong unions is important to you. Feel free to include any personal or professional ties you have to the labor movement.

Scholarship applicants will be notified by email by C.O.B. on Wednesday, March 8th whether or not you have received an award.

***THE CHALLENGE:***

While there’s no cap on the number of participants, to ensure the viability of the training program and keep our costs down, we have set a minimum enrollment of 50 people by March 7th or the training will be cancelled, and fees refunded.

With your support, we can train and build a community for North Carolina labor on Twitter that’s large enough to shape news coverage, recruit influential allies to our causes, and hold elected officials accountable.
