For the 65th year in a row, hundreds of North Carolina’s union members, labor leaders, and elected officials came together at the Annual Convention of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO to say “count me in” to build power for working people through organizing, mobilizing, and voting together for a better life.
The convention brought together more than 300 labor leaders from across North Carolina for three days of speeches, discussions, and workshops to create a better future through organizing, political power, and building solidarity through racial justice. This year’s convention also included the election of NC State AFL-CIO leadership to new 4-year terms and a forum for U.S. Senate candidates to answer tough questions about their commitment to empowering working people.
Our 64th Annual Convention will be held at the Hotel Ballast Wilmington, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in our state’s charming “Port City”! We hope you will say “Count me in!” to join us there on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (2 1/2 days!) October 13-15, 2021. Registration will begin at 7pm on Tues. (10/12) and continue at 8am on Wed. (10/13). The Annual Convention will convene at 9am on Wed., (10/13).
The NC State AFL-CIO’s 63rd Annual Convention was held online this year via Zoom, Thursday and Friday, September 24th and 25th. The two-day convention brought together labor, community, and political leaders from across the state to discuss ways to fight for a better future through organizing, political power, and community building.
We will miss seeing you in person, but during this pandemic, safety comes first, which is why our Executive Board voted to move the convention online. We have lined up exciting speakers including Sara Steffens, Secretary-Treasurer of the Communication Workers (CWA), Fred Redmond, International Vice President of the Steelworkers (USW), North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and endorsed candidates like Cal Cunningham for US Senate and Jessica Holmes for Labor Commissioner. North Carolina was well represented at the 2017 AFL-CIO convention with speeches, remarks, or panel presentations by state federation president MaryBe McMillan, AFGE national president and state fed vice president J. David Cox Sr., Triangle Labor Council treasurer and North Carolina A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) executive director Melvin Montford, and IATSE Local 322 stagehand and labor-endorsed Charlotte City Council candidate Braxton Winston II.
More than 200 delegates and guests gathered for our 60th Annual Convention in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, Sept. 13-15th to elect a new president and new executive board, hear from inspiring speakers, participate in skill-building workshops and movement-building breakout sessions, honor James Andrews and North Carolina’s rich labor history, and adopt new resolutions to guide the organization over the coming year.
