WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 12, 2013) – As debate over immigration reform begins on the Senate floor, state and local AFL-CIO representatives and other advocates for working families headed to Washington, DC today to lobby Senator Kay Hagan and other members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation on comprehensive immigration reform.  Labor leaders and allies are calling for a bill that includes a broad roadmap to citizenship for the more than 11 million aspiring Americans and strong protections for all workers.

The lobby visit is part of a national lobby day involving advocates for workers from across the country.  The lobby visits coincide with a massive mobilization the week of June 10-14 encouraging working families to contact their members of Congress and demand fair and compassionate immigration reform.

“The time is now to create a comprehensive immigration process that protects all workers, including new American immigrants,” said MaryBe McMillan, secretary-treasurer of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO.  “That is why the AFL-CIO in North Carolina and a diverse coalition of immigrant community, faith groups, and other organizations across the country are mobilizing to call on Congress to pass an immigration bill that values freedom, fairness, and family.”
