Working America-North Carolina state director blasts discriminatory House Bill 2
Working America's state director for North Carolina, Carolyn Smith, issued the following statement in response to the passage and signing of House Bill 2 into law last week:
“As if spending thousands of taxpayer dollars to enshrine discrimination into law weren’t despicable enough, the signing of HB 2 by North Carolina Gov. McCrory robs our local elected representatives of their basic authority to serve as stewards of local taxpayer dollars.
Working families in Greensboro and across the state need leaders who will uphold and protect the worth and dignity of every North Carolinian while striving to make our state work for everyone. We need leaders with the courage to stand up to hate, protect all of our children, and focus on finding real solutions to the challenges we are facing -- not wasting time codifying discrimination and preventing working people from making a livable wage.”
Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is the nation’s largest organization for working people who don’t have the benefit of a union on the job. Working America has over 43,000 active members in North Carolina. Last fall, Working America helped lead the coalition to pass a minimum wage hike for city workers in Greensboro, NC – the first of its kind in the region.
