Unions working in union to organize North Carolina

NC State AFL-CIO convened an "Organizers Roundtable" yesterday in Raleigh to strategize about ways to bring more working people together in union to raise wages and improve working conditions in North Carolina.

Attending the roundtable were more than two dozen union organizers from affiliates representing workers in every economic sector - including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and public service - who gathered to share updates about their campaigns, discuss both challenges and opportunities, and share ideas for building collective power for working people.

Support for affiliate organizing is one of the AFL-CIO's core mission areas. The North Carolina state federation has developed programs and services like Labor Sabbath and the Organizers Roundtable to promote union campaigns and to raise public awareness of the advantages that come with working in union to bring democracy into the workplace.

MaryBe McMillan, NC State AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, has led an effort, with the support of national AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre and others, to get national and international unions to devote more resources to organizing in the South.

"I am relentless about the need to invest in union organizing in North Carolina and in the South because, to me, for the American labor movement, it really is a matter of 'Organize the South or die'," said McMillan.
