Media Advisory: NC Press Call for Workers to Demand Congress Pass HEROES Act

On July 28th,working people from across North Carolina will be demanding the U.S. Senate pass the HEROES Act, a comprehensive coronavirus relief package that would confront the three crises facing America: a public health pandemic, an economic free fall and long-standing structural racism.

In a press call this Tuesday, July 28th at 12pm ET, members and leaders from unions of working people in North Carolina will be calling on Senator Thom Tillis to support the essential role of working people in this pandemic by passing the HEROES Act, legislation that already passed the U.S. House in May to protect the lives and livelihoods of working Americans still grappling with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO: Senator Thom Tillis (invited); MaryBe McMillan, President, NC State AFL-CIO; William Samuel, Director of Government Affairs, AFL-CIO; Darla McGlamery, Business Agent, IATSE Local 491, representing workers in the film industry; Essie Hogue, President, AFGE Local 1738, representing frontline healthcare workers in the VA; Timmia McIlwaine, CWA Local 3640, representing essential workers in the airline industry; and Tommy Pintacuda, IBT Local 61, representing essential workers at UPS.

WHEN: Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 12:00pm ET

WHERE: online via Zoom [LINK

WHY: The coronavirus pandemic is not over, and Americans need additional federal relief from its effects--including hazard pay for frontline workers, extended additional federal unemployment benefits, an emergency infectious disease standard for employers to follow to protect employees on the job, and funding for essential government services like public schools and the postal service. That’s what the HEROES Act does. It passed the U.S. House on May 15th, and it is time for the U.S. Senate to debate and pass this critical legislation.
