(Washington, DC, 11/27/2012) North Carolina AFL-CIO staff, union leaders, and other working family advocates are headed to Washington, D.C. on November 27 to lobby our North Carolina congressional delegation on how cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will hurt families in our state. The lobby fly-in day coincides with a new report released by the AFL-CIO showing more than 1.7 million people in our state receive Social Security income and 1.4 million get health care coverage through Medicare. Of the 1,813,298 North Carolinians who get their health care coverage from Medicaid, 960,827 are children and 182,522 are seniors. The report also found these programs pump $48.2 billion a year into our state’s economy.

Members of the lobby delegation will tell Senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr and U.S. Representatives Mel Watt, Heath Shuler, and others to say no to cuts in benefits for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security and to end tax cuts for the richest 2%.
