Freedom Summer will be screened June 24th across NC
Fifty years have passed since Freedom Summer, when more than 700 local organizers and students took segregated Mississippi by storm, registering voters and creating freedom schools. This effort put a national spotlight on the violent voter suppression facing Black Americans in the deep south and ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Half a century later, voting rights are under attack again. NC State AFL-CIO is proud to support Democracy NC in bringing the new movie Freedom Summer to eight cities across North Carolina as part of the Moral Movies film series. This award-winning one-hour documentary takes a look back at the Summer of ‘64 and offers a resonate and compelling call for renewed efforts to protect voting rights and access to the polls.
