Protesting corporate corruption of government

Occupy Winston-Salem is supporting a national day of action on February 29 to call attention to the corporations that fund ALEC. They're calling it Occupy the Corporations / #Feb29.

A.L.E.C. (American Legislative Exchange Council) is one of the most outrageous examples of corporate influence in state and national government. Reynolds American is a primary sponsor, and Winston-Salem is home to Reynolds' corporate headquarters.

One of Reynolds' Vice Presidents, David Powers, sits on the UNC Board of Governors, which just pushed through a massive tuition increase. Despite posting $300 million in profits at the end of 2011, Reynolds recently announced new layoffs. And Reynolds refuses to meet with farmworker advocates to discuss widespread human rights abuses in North Carolina tobacco fields.

There are two main actions in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

During its "Mega Banner Event", Occupy will unveil one if its mega-banners at the Wells Fargo building, 100 N. Main Street - from 7 to 9am.

At 4pm until 6pm, Occupy, faith, labor, and others will protest ALEC, corporate corruption of our government, and job cuts outside Reynolds American's HQ, 401 N. Main Street.
