You could qualify for free tax filing

From now until April 18, it is tax filing season in the United States.  For those who watch television or surf the Internet, that means you are probably seeing a lot of ads for companies who want to file your taxes and provide you with expensive and risky refund anticipation loans.

If you or someone you know needs help preparing their tax returns, the IRS has a network of volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) providers who can do so at no charge.  From the IRS website:

The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.

Click here to see a list of VITA providers in North Carolina, sorted by county.  Information on this list may change, and it does not include every provider.  For more information, you can call the VITA Site Locator hotline at 1-800-906-9887 to find a site near you.
