Exposing the empire of the man poisoning N.C. politics

Art Pope is the most dangerous man in North Carolina politics. Art Pope uses his empire to finance a network that makes him richer but hurts the rest of us in the 99 percent.

A crowd of about 100 people turned up for the first teach-in about Art Pope, organized by Democracy NC and the NC State AFL-CIO, and more than 300 people watched the live stream online on December 13.

The forum, held at the headquarters of the North Carolina Association of Educators in Raleigh, even drew participants from Americans for Prosperity and Civitas Action, two parts of Art Pope's poisonous empire discussed at the teach-in.

The teach-in began with a biography of Art Pope by Bob Hall of Democracy NC, followed by a panel featuring Chris Kromm of the Institute for Southern Studies, our own MaryBe McMillan of the NC State AFL-CIO, and Seth Keel, a student at Middle Creek High School and member of the youth activist organization, N.C.H.E.A.T.

In this video, Chris Kromm of the Institute for Southern Studies explains how Art Pope uses his corporate cash to poison N.C. politics.

Here MaryBe explains how Art Pope's empire perpetuates economic injustice. By keeping workers unorganized Pope keeps his corporate power intact. Pope's agenda, MaryBe said, "promotes the interests of the few while seeking to divide the many so it can prevent us from organizing widespread opposition."

In this video, Seth Keel connects Art Pope's war on public education to his bottom line. Art Pope was instrumental in the Tea Party takeover of the Wake County School Board in 2009, after which Wake Schools nationally-recognized diversity policy was overturned. Seth explains how Art Pope's campaign to promote inferior education for students from poor and minority communities creates his future low-wage customers.

Call Art Pope at 919-861-6444. Tell him to stop using his corporate cash to poison North Carolina politics.

We are prepared to take this teach-in on the road. Send an email to [email protected] for more information about bringing the Art Pope Exposed teach-in to your community.
