According to the National Employment Law Project (NELP), 42 percent of American workers get paid less than $15 an hour. In North Carolina, that number jumps to half of all workers in this state. The good news is these workers overwhelmingly approve of unions and support the goal of $15 and union rights, especially in the South, where 77 percent of workers earning less than $15 an hour support the cause. "This outpouring of support for a voice on the job from underpaid workers across the economy is the latest sign that workers across the economy are ready to join together in unions to address the most important problems on the job," said Christine Owens, Executive Director at NELP.
