Duke Faculty Score Overwhelming Victory in Union Election

Courage shown at Duke will provide much-needed hope to other working people who want a union on their side in the anti-union South

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 18, 2016) – The North Carolina State AFL-CIO released the following statement from Secretary-Treasurer MaryBe McMillan about the outcome of the union election at Duke University, today:

“The NC State AFL-CIO congratulates the adjunct faculty and SEIU Faculty Forward for their astounding 6 to 1 organizing victory at Duke University! By standing up and standing together, faculty now can use their collective voice to improve working and learning conditions on campus.

“It’s not easy, especially in the anti-union South, for working people to exercise their right to organize.  The courage of the adjunct faculty at Duke will provide much-needed hope to other working people who, in this time of increasing inequality, want to organize and bargain for their fair share.

“We welcome Duke Faculty Forward to the union movement, and we look forward to working with them to improve the lives of working families around the state.”
