Labor, Civil Rights, and Immigration groups to gather in Greensboro on Wednesday (8/21)

A coalition of labor and immigration groups will gather Wednesday with petitions, visual displays and more to call on Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) to support immigration reform.

Specifically, the coalition urges Rep. Coble to bring an immigration bill to the floor vote that:

  1. Provides a road map to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants now in the United States;
  2. Protects workers’ rights and ensures any worker authorization system treats workers fairly;
  3. Protects immigrants against employers that take advantage of their status; and
  4. Allows for rational, fair and just enforcement.

“The people of Guilford County care deeply about this issue,” said Carolyn Smith, state director for Working America. “We are asking Representative Coble to make the right decision to support comprehensive immigration reform.”

What: Rally/Press Conference at Rep. Coble’s District Office
When: Wednesday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m. EST
Where: 2102 North Elm St., Greensboro, NC
Who: Working America, North Carolina State AFL-CIO, State Employees Association of North Carolina, Teamsters Local 391, Guilford County Association of Educators, Immigrant Rights Working Group of Guilford County, Greensboro NAACP

AFL-CIO petition calls on Boehner to stop blocking reform

Even if we can win Congressman Coble's support for the commonsense immigration reform Americans deserve, we need Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives to let the House vote!

Now Speaker John Boehner has the power to bring the House to a vote on immigration, but he is allowing GOP leadership to stall on the issue. Despite momentum from the Senate, there are reports that the House won’t vote on this issue until late in the fall.

Tell John Boehner that the People want a vote!

We are pushing for Speaker Boehner to bring a vote to the floor immediately, because neither Americans nor new American immigrants can wait for Congress to get their act together. Our goal is to get 500,000 to 1 million signatures on a coalition petition. These signatures would be delivered directly to GOP leadership after Congress returns from August recess.

Join us in telling Speaker Boehner to, "Stop holding 11 million lives hostage -- let the House of Representatives vote on a roadmap to citizenship now!"

We’re fighting for more than they are--we’re fighting for our families, for a good day on the job, and for the promise of liberty. They’re trying to make this a partisan issue, but the truth is, a common sense immigration process is good for our economy and it’s good for all American workers. All of us will see higher wages once we fix our mismanaged and broken system. That’s why we need you to join us in demanding that the House bring citizenship to a vote.
