The CIW’s Fair Food Program, through which farmworkers are experiencing increased wages, freedom from sexual harassment and discrimination, and other never-before-seen rights, has just this summer expanded to North Carolina for the first time. And at the same time, Publix Supermarkets is aggressively expanding into North Carolina — yet for six years, they have refused to even meet with farmworkers to discuss taking responsibility for abuse of farmworkers’ rights in their supply chain, even while Walmart, Fresh Market, Stop and Shop, Giant, and other competitors have done so.
