Affordable Care Act on trial at the Supreme Court

With the U.S. Supreme Court considering a challenge to the 2010 Affordable Care Act, our friends at Action NC are organizing a public discussion about the future of health care reform in this country. Congressman Brad Miller will join others to lead the discussion, moderated by Adam Searing of the NC Justice Center. Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend this event, but you must RSVP.

What: Public discussion about the Supreme Court challenge to health care reform
When: Monday, March 26, 2012 at 12 noon
Where: Pullen Memorial Baptist Church,  1801 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27605

Join Action NC at for a lively discussion about the future of the Affordable Care Act in light of the Supreme Court challenge and the polarized political environment in which we live on Monday, March 26 at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, starting at noon.

Professor Gene Nichol, Director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina and Congressman Brad Miller will lead a discussion moderated by Adam Searing of the North Carolina Justice Center about the constitutional challenge to the landmark health reform law and the role of government in meeting needs and promoting fairness.

The legal issues being heard by the Supreme Court next week include:

  • Whether there is jurisdiction to challenge the constitutionality of the health care law before it comes into complete effect
  • Whether the individual mandate is unconstitutional
  • Whether the individual mandate is sever-able from the remainder of the law
  • Whether the federal government can coerce states to expand Medicaid

The overarching political issue concerns the role of government in providing health care and maintaining other components of an adequate social safety net, and in promoting greater access and equity, and also the future relationship between the federal government, state governments, and their respective citizens.

This will be an informative conversation about fundamental questions whose answers will affect all of us in significant ways going forward, not merely the uninsured and the underinsured. Please join us.

Discussion to be held at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. in Raleigh on Monday, March 26th starting at noon. Lunch will be served starting at 11:45. The event and lunch are free, but RSVP is required.
