SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry to join panel of working people at UNC-Chapel Hill

Two years ago, people who work as cooks and cashiers in fast food restaurants launched a movement to raise their wages to $15/hour and win the right to form a union without retaliation.

Now that movement is growing. Home care workers, airport baggage handlers and passenger attendants, adjunct college faculty, and other underpaid people are joining the call to raise wages and rebuild broadly shared prosperity. The Fight for $15 and a union is now calling on students to join in an upcoming protest at UNC as part of the upcoming “Fight for $15 on 4/15” national day of action.

What: Panel discussion on low-wage work
Where: Chapman Hall, UNC-Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514
When: Monday, March 23, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM
RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/1603704339843728/

Before then, on March 23rd, students, community allies, and members of local unions will host a diverse panel of working people at UNC-Chapel Hill along with SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry.

This event is cosponsored with Ignite NC, Raise Up for $15 and the Duke Center for the Study of Class, Labor, and Social Sustainability.

Today’s generation of students face a number of challenges as they get ready to enter the workforce. Many students have taken on significant debt. The wage floor has fallen, which is hurting communities across the country. Studies show that younger graduates are increasingly taking low-wage, part-time jobs.

Please join us in turning out a diverse crowd of students and other activists for this campus event!
