NC Lawmakers to Join Fight to Restore the Freedom of Public Employees to Collectively Negotiate for a Better Life
Lawmakers, workers, and labor and community leaders will announce legislation to value public service by repealing North Carolina’s Jim Crow-era ban on collective bargaining agreements
[RALEIGH] - Rep. Zack Hawkins and Sen. Wiley Nickel will hold a press conference with local elected officials, workers, and labor leaders on the value of public services and the women and men who deliver them to our community, and call on our elected leaders to support them by repealing G.S. 95-98, North Carolina’s Jim Crow-era ban on collectively negotiated contracts for public employees. From brave first responders to dedicated public school teachers to life-saving nurses, our community is strong because of those who answer the call to public service. Repealing G.S. 95-98 will restore their freedom to negotiate collectively for enforceable agreements that govern the terms and conditions of their employment, a freedom already enjoyed by most private sector workers in the state.
