We...have the power!

Hundreds of North Carolinians from all organizations in the Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HK on J) people's coalition descended upon the state legislative building on Tuesday for HK on J / People of All Colors Lobby Day.

From a report by the News & Observer:

About 300 people representing a coalition of groups including the state NAACP, Democracy North Carolina, the AFL-CIO and others met at the First Baptist Church on South Wilmington Street before marching to the Legislative Building. They wanted the message out that they were opposed to a voter ID law, loosened regulations on charter schools, limits on early voting, more restrictions on organized labor, and high-interest payday loans.

“We have the opportunity to build a progressive movement the likes (of which) have never been seen in the state,” said MaryBe McMillan, secretary-treasurer of state AFL-CIO. “If we don’t build the movement, our state will become unrecognizable.”

MaryBe McMillan delivered a rousing speech to attendees who gathered at a local Raleigh church before walking over to the legislature on Jones Street, together.

In her remarks, MaryBe reminded Lobby Day participants that, "The power is not in this building on Jones Street, brothers and sisters. The power is in our hands!"
