N.C. WORKING FAMILIES JOIN SENATE MAJORITY LEADER REID IN CALLING FOR MITT ROMNEY TO RELEASE HIS TAX RETURNS

North Carolinians who pay federal income tax can’t understand why Mitt Romney refuses to prove that he has paid any at all

Raleigh, NC - Today, working families joined Sen. Harry Reid in calling for Mitt Romney to release his tax returns. Recently, the Senate Majority Leader voiced concerns that Romney might not have paid any taxes for more than a decade. Rather than address the issue directly and release his tax documents, Romney told Sen. Reid to reveal the source for his information and “put up or shut up.”

“Working people look to our elected officials to be examples to our communities,” said James Andrews, President of the NC State AFL-CIO. “We expect them to be honest to the American people and to hold themselves to even higher standards than the average American would. We expect no less of Romney and hope he will tell the American public the truth about his tax returns regardless of what they may show.”

Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns, the obvious way to disprove Sen. Reid’s allegation that he has not paid any federal income tax in ten years, is particularly galling coming from a candidate who has made cutting taxes for millionaires and billionaires the cornerstone of his campaign.

While Romney is in our state condescending to NASCAR fans, touring a furniture factory in a city devastated by the sort of outsourcing he helped to pioneer, and pandering for votes at a BBQ shack, reporters and the hard-working, tax-paying North Carolinians he meets ought to ask why Romney refuses to prove that he pays his taxes, too.
