Call now to stop the Trans Pacific Partnership

Stop Congress from allowing “NAFTA on steroids” on the fast track

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is sweeping changes to our government disguised as a “trade agreement”, and it’s now being negotiated in secret by 600 “corporate advisors” and trade representatives from 12 Pacific nations including the United States, Japan, Chile, Vietnam, and Australia – although more countries, including China, could join later.

TPP is “a dream of the 1 percent,” says the non-partisan watchdog Public Citizen. TPP is an agreement “that in one blow could:

  • offshore millions of American jobs,
  • free the banksters from oversight,
  • ban Buy America policies needed to create green jobs and rebuild our economy,
  • decrease access to medicine,
  • flood the U.S. with unsafe food and products,
  • and empower corporations to attack our environmental and health safeguards.”

The public overwhelmingly opposed to more NAFTA-style trade deals, and “TPP is NAFTA on steroids,” says Lori Wallach, Director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch. North Carolina has lost over 370,000 manufacturing jobs thanks to NAFTA and the World Trade Organization. Now, TPP could deliver a devastating blow to our state and our nation.

Rep. Price and Rep. Butterfield need to hear from you

TPP is so unpopular that the Obama Administration is asking Congress to give it so-called “fast track” status, which would allow the President to sign the deal before the U.S. Senate votes on ratification and would limit Senators to casting only up-or-down votes with no opportunity to change the treaty.

Two members of Congress from North Carolina in particular, Rep. David Price and Rep. G.K. Butterfield, could cast deciding votes on whether or not to put TPP on the fast track to passage.

TPP will impact every worker in North Carolina, so regardless of where you live in North Carolina, Rep. Price and Rep. Butterfield need to hear from you!

Call Rep. Price at 202-225-1784 and call Rep. Butterfield at 202-225-3101. Use this script:

Hello, my name is ___________ . I am from ___________, North Carolina. I’m calling today about Fast Track trade authority.

I would like the representative to sign the letter opposing Fast Track trade authority, written by Congresswoman DeLauro and Congressman Miller. This letter makes clear that Congress will not give up its constitutional authority over trade. North Carolina cannot take another bad trade deal!

I am very worried about the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a so-called “free trade” deal. After years of secret negotiations, the leaked TPP texts reveal this deal would offshore our jobs and flood us with unsafe imports. Fast Track would let the president sign this deal before Congress even gets to vote on it.

It’s Congress’ job to fully vet trade deals and ensure they work for everyone, not just giant corporations pushing TPP. It would be irresponsible for members of Congress to give up their authority over trade when the TPP is lurking in the shadows.

Would the Representative please add his name to this critical letter?

Corporations have legions of lobbyists and campaign donors lining up to convince members of Congress to put TPP on the fast track to passage. But you have something members of Congress need even more – your vote and your voice!  Make those calls!
